Welcome back to 2015!
It's lovely to see new faces and be in a new classroom. There's lots going on this term with the swimming tutors coming every day for two weeks, then another 4 weeks of swimming and a display, tabloids and meet the teacher evening. I look forward to seeing lots of new faces.
Just a reminder that you need to bring a hat EVERY DAY, or you can't play out in the sun :( We want to keep you sun safe so this is very important! It's very warm weather so we need to make sure that we're wearing shorts and a t-shirt and have lunch and a drink at break times.
You need to bring named togs, towel and bag every day for swimming even if it looks cloudy, because it's definitely warm enough and often brightens up by the time we go swimming!
Remember to practice your reading and spelling every night and have your notebook signed. Homework is given on a Monday and due back on a Thursday.

Athletics Afternoon
We were very lucky with the weather on the 19th of November and we were able to have our athletics afternoon! It was very windy but lots of parents came to support our runners and everyone tried their hardest!
Well done to everyone who competed! In Room 7 we had lots of winners!
Saluselo came 1st for the boys Year 4 50m and 75m
Jackson came 2nd for the boys Year 3 50m and 75m
Elisha came 3rd for the boys Year 4 50m and 75m
Sharlom came 2nd for the girls Year 4 75m.
Three of our other girls ran very well and took out the 1st, 2nd and 3rd spots in the girls Year 4 50m and 75m races too!
We have some awesome runners in our classroom! Well done!

Angela's Bike
Angela was super lucky to receive her bike, helmet and t-shirt from the Variety Children's Charity on Tuesday! We are so proud of her! She has always worked hard in class and been a deserving student. Hopefully she gets to ride it a bit more when the weather is better.

Get Set Go
This term we have the lovely Nicola coming in from Get, Set, Go to teach us PE every Thursday afternoon. We're so lucky to have her and we really enjoy her lessons. We've been learning all about balancing the past few weeks and played lots of exciting games. We've gone away and practiced between her lessons and have always had lots of fun and learnt new things.

Life in Samoa
In Week 2 and 3 we kept going with our inquiry topic on Samoa.
In Week 2 we looked at shelter in Samoa. We looked at the types of materials that could be used to build houses and decided that they use lots of natural materials, like wood and leaves from the trees. We also decided that we should design a house and label it. We used things like coconut husks, coconut leaves, wood, hay and sometimes metal called corrugated iron for the roof. The walls were usually made out of wood. We worked in groups of four to practice our team work skills and use each person's different ideas. We then talked about the buildings we had drawn and decided what sort of tools they would use to build them. We didn't think they would have electric tools like drills and we thought about how people would put things together and cut down the trees. Some of our ideas were saws, hammers, screwdrivers and axes.
In Week 3 we looked at clothes. We thought about Samoa and used what we already know to guide us. We knew that the weather is hot in Samoa all year, because people from New Zealand go on holiday there during our winter. We used this and pictures and our own experiences to come to the answer! We decided that people in Samoa wouldn't want to wear thick clothes, they would like to wear thin clothes. Some people in our class are from Samoa and they told us all about wearing a lavalava or an ie. We also found out that girls wear a type of dress called a puletasi. There is also a special dress code on White Sunday in Samoa. Everyone buys new white clothes and wears them to church to celebrate childhood on the second Sunday in October.

Samoan Food
In week one we were looking at food cross the Pacific Islands. We are focusing on Samoa! We have lots of students from Samoa in our classroom so we're really lucky to have lots of our own knowledge.
We shared our knowledge about the weather and how it would affect the food that could grow in Samoa. We decided that we would find lots of tropical foods like coconut and pineapple, because the weather was warm all year. Foods like that wouldn't grow well in New Zealand. We know that Samoa is an island and has water all around it and so people in Samoa eat lots of fish because they can easily go fishing!
We all wrote a little fact sheet and talked about it with our syndicate in our sharing time on Thursday. We learnt lots about Fiji and Niue from Room 6 and Room 8A when we arrived after our PE slot!

Welcome Back for Term 4!
I hope you guys all had a great 2 weeks holiday and are ready to get back into it! Term 4 is going to be super busy with lots of great stuff happening! We've got our athletics afternoon, culture groups, Get Set Go PE lessons every Thursday, Christmas Crossover and so many other exciting things happening!
We're all learning about Pacific Cultures in our inquiry and Room 7 are going to be looking at Samoa and sharing our new learning with the rest of the junior school. We're going to be looking at food in week 1, clothes in week 2, shelter in week 3 and myths and legends in week 4. Perhaps you could ask your family if they know anything about these topics, or if you have anything from home you could use to help you learn?
In Writing we're continuing with explanations and using paragraphs to sort our ideas and then we're going to move on to letters, reports and descriptions. Remember that you need full stops, capital letters and ALL your words in your writing! Keep practicing your spelling every night to help you become better than before and a superstar speller!
In Reading we're concentrating on our skills to use while we're reading and how to think about the text we've read. Room 7 are great readers and can find out what the words say and mean, but we're going to be better than before at predicting what's going to happen in the text, thinking about the characters in stories and how they can make a story different, AND getting better at reading the book and making decisions about what the story is really telling us in it's hidden meanings! Get better than before by reading your book EVERY night at home and GET YOUR NOTEBOOK SIGNED!
In Maths we're looking at fractions and problem solving. We all need to be able to use fractions and name them when we're done! For problem solving we're going to need all of our skills from the year to answer questions using adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing - so make sure those basic facts stay super fast by practicing! Mrs Dunne is going to be doing different Maths and looking at position and orientation and talking about directions, as well as probability.
You're going to have so much to do this term so make sure you're sleeping enough, eating the healthy food your body needs and concentrating hard!
