Writing in Week 5

In Room 6 this week we have been writing even more letters! We decided to write a letter to parents of Ruapotaka School who read our blog, to remind them of all the things we need to bring to school.

Alicia wrote a fantastic letter and here it is! We liked her paragraphs and amazing detail for her reader :)

Dear Parents.

Please bring the photo money back to school before June the 3rd on Wednesday. Send your child to bring it back in the little photo case please. If you don't pay for it before June 3rd your child will not get a photo.

Remember to dress your children in their school uniform otherwise they will look funny without their school uniform in the photo.

Please give your child lunch everyday so they don't starve or if they don't have lunch on a Friday or Monday they can get lunch from the office.

Remember to help do homework with your child every night. Make sure your child brings back their homework every day.

In your child's lunch they could have a healthy sandwich, a drink bottle filled with water, a muesli bar and maybe one or two treats like a biscuit or two biscuits. Your child is not allowed to big bottles of fizzy drinks and big blocks of chocolate. Your child is also not allowed big bags of lollies too. Please don't send your child to school with their lunchbox overfilled with junk food. Stay healthy because it is important. Make sure your child has the right amount of food in their lunch box so they don't get fat and keep very unhealthy because they can get sick and have to go to the doctors. It is very important to give the right kind of goodness to your children.

Keep your child healthy.

Letters to Thank Someone

In Room 6 this week we are recapping letters. We are learning to write a letter for a purpose. Yesterday we wrote letters to thank Matt and Andy for their amazing show on Monday.

We wrote them into our writing books and Miss Walters checked them, then we published them using plain paper and when we had finished that, we illustrated the letter by adding in beautiful pictures of the characters or favourite parts we had talked about.

We were really impressed with Jessica's letter, which was beautiful and neat, with totally AMAZING illustrations! Agueer had lots of information about the show and her favourite parts, with some great paragraphs!Taniela wrote a short but sweet letter where he told us his favourite characters - Stinky was his favourite! Well done Jessica, Augeer and Taniela!

Matt and Andy

Yesterday, Matt and Andy came to our school to teach us about waste and recycling. They time traveled to the future to save Yummy Land from a scientist who wanted to turn it into Stinky Bag City.

Simon wasted lots of food that Wormy the worm could eat. Simon put his left over food in the rubbish and not the compost bin.

Wormy and Simon made a YouTube video to tell the people of Yummy Land the message about not wasting food. The video worked and the scientist's plan didn't work.

The scientist cried to his mum and Yummy Land was saved.

Miss Walters recorded some videos and Jessica took some photos. Check out Matt and Andy's show below!

The opening song introduced us to waste and rubbish.

Wormy singing about the amount of rubbish and how he can't eat the food scraps.

Matt and Andy are pretty famous - they even had a show running at the Easter Show back in April! If you want to see them again, watch their videos, look at their photos or find out more about them, then check out their facebook page - www.facebook.com/mattandandyNZ

Trash Talk

Our new inquiry topic is all about the environment and waste. We called it Trash Talk!

We've already talked about our current knowledge and what we want to know and so now it's time to get stuck in an investigate!

We're looking at different types of waste and what happens to them to start off with. If you have any recycling items at home that you wouldn't mind letting us bring to school that would be great! We can see them and investigate.

Kotipi's Favourite Thing...

My favourite thing in class is how we made the ANZAC letters. We made the letters with paper and then got coffee and tea and we painted the paper then waited for it to dry the next day. Then the next day we crunched it up into a small ball then we undid it gently.

Then we ripped the edges and started to write our ANZAC letter.

When we wrote our ANZAC letters we had to write small and light.

Dora's Favourite Thing...

My favourite thing in my class in Term 1 was the April Fools Day video because my teacher, Miss Walters, tricked us. She tricked us with the marshmallow harvest photo in Christchurch with her parents.

Miss Walters made a video of us when we were talking about it. We were wondering what was happening on 1st of April. At the end of the video we knew now that it was April Fools Day.

Shhh... I love secrets even when I spell them. Miss Walters whispered excitedly "do you want to know a secret?" Half of us shouted yes the other half no. We all laughed when she told the secret. April Fools Day comes from America. April Fools Day is my favourite thing of all.

Pasifika Art

This term our focus in art is on using pastels.

We're using our pastels to make some beautiful pasifika themed art using flowers and bright colours.

We drew out the outlines in pencil first and added in any patterns that we wanted to create.

Then we decided which 4 colours we were going to use and then coloured them in different patterns using the pastels. The pastels gave us a really bright colour and made our designs pop!

Then we put a black outline around the flower petals so it made them clearly stand out. We then put them onto black paper and wrote our names in white so that it contrasted with  the bright colours.
