End of Term 1!

This week is our last week of Term 1! How quickly time flies when you're busy working hard and having fun!

On Wednesday 1st April your families can come into our classroom in the morning and see you working hard and what we do at school.

Our last day is Thursday 2nd April and we finish at 2pm. Make sure your family knows that you need picking up early and remember that Good Friday (3rd April) is a public holiday and is the first day of our school holidays, so please don't come to school!

I hope that you all have a safe and happy school holiday and remember to come back to school rested and ready to learn on Monday 20th April :) Remember that you can keep practising your reading with Duffy Books, writing an awesome short story for the Barfoot and Thompson (here's the link if you missed it - http://www.youngauthorschallenge.co.nz/), talking lots with your family and whanau AND maths on skoolbo! There's lots of things you can do to keep your brain ticking these holidays!

Have a great break!

Inquiry Learning

This year for our inquiry learning we are focusing on the past, present and where to next?

We have started discussing New Zealand's past and what it was like to live here in the past.

Room 6 came up with some great ideas and we grouped ourselves together to find out more.
We noticed from our National Library books that life looked very different in the photos and news articles we saw.

Then we checked out what our lives look like in comparison. Again we split into groups and helped each other learn more about the differences between the past and the present.

Afterwards we arranged them into a Venn diagram as a class and stapled our facts to the wall - have a look at our work below! The facts in the middle fit in the past and the present :)

We also looked at special places around New Zealand and looked at the important buildings you can see on Auckland's skyline. We linked our art into our inquiry and created a silhouette with the tall buildings and the Sky Tower, and used texture and hot or cold colours for the sky!

Waka Landing

On Wednesday 25th March we hopped on the bus and went to the Point England Reserve to welcome the waka who had sailed all the way from Hawaii using the traditional navigation, with 2000 children from the Maniakalani cluster schools.

When we got there we sat sensibly and waited for everyone to arrive and then the fun began with lots of singing, speeches and the people from the waka coming ashore onto Point England reserve.

There are lots of videos to come and information on the Maniakalani website - check them out on this link:

When the event was winding up we were able to walk down onto the beach and high five each of the crew before we left to go back to school.

Duffy Role Model Assembly 2015

Last week we had an unexpected surprise!

We had two visitors to our school who put on a special assembly for us. Their names were Mary and Peter and they put on a show using our students as actors! The first story was called Yanno and the Dancing Cows and two of our actors from Room 6 were chosen to play cows.

Everyone did an amazing job and really got into the acting and put on an amazing show that had us laughing the whole way through!

For the second story, Miss Letcher and Mrs Buchanan were chosen to be a chicken and a wolf, and tell us all the story about the sky falling - we laughed lots!

Swimming Superstars

It is the last week of swimming and it looks like we've been lucky with the cyclone passing quickly, so we're back to swimming again!

We have a new club in Room 6 - the backwards swimming club!

Everyone in this photo is able to swim backwards with straight arms, fast kicking legs and can keep their tummies pushed up to the sky to stop themselves from sinking. Congratulations!!

This week is our last week swimming as the weather is starting to think about cooling down and our lovely Board of Trustees can only keep it running for so many weeks. Please remember that our school pool is for use during school hours by the classes for their daily lessons and we don't want others using it after school. We definitely don't want any injuries, so please make good decisions with your family!

Swimming

We've had a very busy few weeks this year already! Swimming started off really well with our lovely tutors taking the class for two weeks. There has been so much progress already, with some students able to swim two lengths of the pool without taking a break!

Remember - it's really important to have togs and a towel in a named bag every day over the next few weeks. The Board of Trustees paid for our tutors and for the pool to be filled and kept clean for 6 weeks. We want you to be water safe and learn to swim so you will be safe :)

Have a look through these photos and see if you can spot our swimming superstars from Room 6!
